Choosing the Right Fabric

Choosing the Right Fabric

Do you have trouble choosing the right fabric for your new quilt project? Do you get stuck trying to figure out color and pattern combinations? Here are a few tips!

Color

Start with the main color and look at it on a color wheel. Choose neighboring colors or colors across it on the wheel. If you are making a quilt that requires many colors, you can also choose tertiary colors on the wheel. Pick multiple shades of each color for added variety.

Scale

Pay attention to the scale, or size, of the designs on the fabric. If the pattern you are working with requires small pieces, choose small scale fabrics. Large scale fabrics are perfect for patterns that require big pieces.

Pre-Cut

If choosing the right fabrics that go together seems too overwhelming, make it easy by choosing pre-cut bundles of fabric that have already been cut, stacked, and tied together for your convenience.

Favorites

Go with your gut! If a certain fabric calls out your name, buy it! You can choose other fabrics based on one or two of your favorites. You’ll enjoy your piece even more if your favorite fabric is used in there.

We have a large variety of fabric for you to choose from in our online store. Simply add items to your cart, check out, and get beautiful fabrics delivered right to your door! Happy Quilting!

  1. I love the tip you gave about going with your gut when it comes to choosing a type of fabric or size that you think would be best for you and your needs. I have heard, too, that it’s important to consider who the primary user of the quilt will be and that you select a fabric according to what they’ll want or need. I’ll be sure to keep this information in mind as I try to buy the perfect quilt for my granddaughter before she leaves for college this summer.
